Washed Blue is part of a series of text embroideries executed with dyed nylon thread on heavy canvas fabric. The thread is dyed through a kind of reversed dyeing process, in which color is extracted from mass-produced garments bought in chain stores and then used to dye the nylon thread. By transferring the dye from clothing onto another material, the ephemeral residual color is transformed into something visual and tangible. The work highlights the use of synthetic dyes in the fashion industry and the consequences this has for both nature and health.
Susanne Roti (b. 1984) holds an MFA in Medium- and Material-Based Art (2022) and a BA in Fashion Design (2013) from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. Her artistic practice explores themes related to clothing and fashion. Her works take shape as wall pieces, textile installations, and sculptures, developed through an experimental approach to embroidery, drawing, and dyeing. Since the spring of 2025, she has had a studio at Romsås Centre through the City of Oslo’s artist studio program.
