By crocheting the B-building of Tveita School, I wanted to give this suburb school in Groruddalen value. The B-building housed the entrance where nine, later ten years of schooling began. Today, the annex has been demolished and replaced with a new building, but the original brick B-building remains unchanged.
A building is like a garment you put on, or have placed over your head. It can be comfortable or uncomfortable. Architects Bernt Heiberg and Ola Mørk Sandvik designed the backdrop for my—and hundreds of other children’s—childhood at Tveita. The school’s brick walls hold countless stories and memories from 1966 to today. The stories of us pupils are interwoven, connected, and build the school in the same way as the crochet stitches come together to form the crocheted school building. The stories are the school.
Connection to Groruddalen
I belong to the first generation of suburb children. Together with my parents, I moved into a brand-new apartment at Tveita when I was only two weeks old and lived there until I was 30. I am married to someone who grew up in Haugenstua. Even though I no longer live in the valley, Tveita still feels like home.
